Family background

Weeks White was born in Kent, England in 1847.¬†Weeks White was married to Susannah Perry (1850-1933) in 1873 in Middlesex, England. He arrived in Sydneyas an assisted immigrant on the ship Samuel Plimsoll with his wife, father and siblings. He lived at 59 Kellick Street, Waterloo and at his house “Excelsior” in Rydalmere at the time of his death on 20 July 1897. White was buried in the Independent Old Ground of Rookwood Cemetery. He left a Will and his estate and assets were assessed at ¬£16,785.

Occupation & interests

Weeks White commenced business as a baker in partnership with his brother William at Redfern. Subsequently, owing to the extension in business which his energy brought about, and after the partnership with his brother had been dissolved, White opened bakery establishments at Enmore and at Newtown. As in the first instance, success came to him, and he was enabled to build up a large and flourishing business. He took a prominent part in all movements in which the baking trade was concerned. White was a life member of the Redfern Bowling Club, a Freemason and a member of the Masonic Lodge, Redfern, and the Grand Lodge of NSW.

Community activity

White, as Waterloo Mayor, presided over ‘an old English Christmas dinner’ on 26 December 1887 for poor residents held at Waterloo Ragged School, and a tea in the evening by his brother William White.

Local government service

Weeks White was an alderman in Waterloo Council on 1885-90 and mayor of Waterloo in 1887. He was an alderman on Newtown Council, representing Enmore Ward, in 1889-94.
