Family background

Walter William Lewis was born in Delegate, New South Wales, on 30 January 1923. In 1943 he married Phyllis Myra June Preston at Bombala, New South Wales. He died on 28 August 1980, survived by his son Ronald, and siblings Alice, Hilda, Ethel and Frank.

Occupation & interests

Walter William Lewis was still living in Delegate when he joined the Australian Army on 30 August 1942. He was discharged from the 1st Australian Motor AMB CON on 30 January 1946. Walter Lewis became a Council employee. For many years he was an organiser of the Municipal Employees Union and rose to become the Assistant Secretary of the Union.

Local government service

Walter Lewis was Alderman for Macquarie Ward, 2 December 1950 to 4 December 1953 and for City Ward, 5 December 1953 to 30 November 1956. He was a member of the Finance Committee, 1951–56 and its Vice-Chairman from 1954–56. He belonged to the City Planning and Improvements Committee, 1951–56. He was appointed Council’s representative on the City of Sydney Eisteddfod Council, 1954–56. Lewis was Deputy Lord Mayor in 1954.
