Family background

Robert Morrow McEnnally was born at Glebe in 1878, son of William James McEnnally and Eleanor Murray nee Cotter. On 2 March 1904 he married Helena Ada Smith at St Matthews Church of England Windsor. He died at Pymble on 4 March 1955, aged 76 years. Helena McEnnally died on 18 November 1979, aged 96 years.

Occupation & interests

McEnnally joined his father’s business, W McEnnally & Co, wholesale fruiterers and case makers for the fruit markets. They ceased operating as a Glebe fruiterer in the 1920s, and became a real estate on the North Shore for 20 years.

Community activity

A director of McEnnally Bros & Co Ltd, lightermen and tugboat proprietors, were contracted by Glebe Council to take horse manure and Glebe garbage out to sea and dump it. An assortment of Glebe’s garbage ended up on city beaches in 1929; Glebe then opted to install an incinerator to solve its problem. Enterprising and energetic McEnnally was also director of company manufacturing straw hat, and was involved in trading ventures in the Solomon Islands.

Local government service

Robert McEnnally time on Council was relatively short. He defeated two other candidates to be elected to Glebe Council on 6 December 1915 as the result of a by-election caused b the death of Thomas Law. He resigned in April 1917 after 16 months on Council.
