Family background

Malcolm Graham as born in 1842 at Sydney, son of Archibald Graham and Elizabeth nee McEwan. On 19 September 1868 he married Mary Jane Theresa Lardner at St Barnabas Church Parramatta Street. There were three children of the marriage. He died at Derwent Street Glebe on 10 July 1878, aged 36 years.

Occupation & interests

Graham was apprenticed to a draper, became an assistant draper and draper, with the firm of Graham, Vaughan & Marsden, George Street Sydney.

Community activity

Malcom Graham was the son of Scottish immigrants who arrived in Sydney in 1838. Two brothers, James, also a Glebe alderman, and Peter Graham were prominent builders in the inner suburbs of Sydney.

Local government service

Malcolm Graham was an alderman on Glebe Council from 1877 to 1878. His brother James was also an alderman on Glebe Council.

Some ratepayers believed Council funds were not spent equitably within Glebe. Graham requested the Council clerk in 1877 to prepare a statement of rates collected in each ward for the last five years, and also the amount expended in each of the four wards for the same period.
