Family background

John Thomas Neale was born at Elizabeth Farm in Parramatta, which his parents were renting from the Macarthurs, in 1833. His parents were George Rodwell and Bridget in 1833; his siblings were Elizabeth, William, Sarah, Henry, Charles and James.

He died at Petersham in 1911 after a long illness in which he was paralysed. He married twice, first to Elvira Agnes Vary in Parramatta in 1856. After she died at 39 in 1865, he married his sister-in-law, Hannah Elizabeth Rabone in 1867. He had four children by his second marriage and two by his first. Two daughters and two sons survived him. He was very likely related to John Neale (1823-97 of Potts Point), an alderman on the City of Sydney Council; possibly his nephew. Also connected with the Rabone family.

Community activity

John Neale was a was a justice of the peace (JP). He was involved with the local Methodist Church. His second wife Hannah was the daughter of a Methodist missionary. He was Returning Officer for the electorate of Newtown-St Peters in 1893-95, 1899 and 1901.

Local government service

John Thomas Neale was an alderman on Newtown Council in 1875-77 and 1883-88, representing Enmore Ward.
