Title Council From To
Alderman City of Sydney 1862 1869

Family background

Note that further in-depth research is required to identify Alderman John Hurley. It is difficult to identify Alderman John Hurley because there were several men of this name in Sydney in the second half of the nineteenth century. One possibility is John Hurley of Campbelltown who was born in Limerick, Ireland, in 1796, arrived in 1824, married Bridget Mary Byrne in 1857 and had six children. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly from 1859 to 1880, and died in Campbelltown in 1882. Deaths for John Hurley are also recorded in Sydney in 1869 (son of Thomas and Catherine), 1872 (son of Michael and Honorah), and later.

Occupation & interests

John Hurley of Camperdown was a coaching contractor and innkeeper. In 1869, John Hurley, a coach maker, was living at 201 Clarence Street. Others of this name in Sydney were a house-smith at 109 Market Street in 1844, and a painter at 199 Clarence Street in 1863.

Parliamentary service

John Hurley (1796-1882) of Camperdown was elected to the Legislative Assembly for Narellan in 1859 but was defeated in 1860. He was re-elected from 1864 to 1869 and from 1874 to 1880. Whether or not he was also a Sydney City Council Alderman has not been determined.

Local government service

John Hurley was elected Alderman for Brisbane Ward from 1 December 1862 to 30 November 1866 and for Phillip Ward from 2 December 1867 to 30 November 1869.
