Occupation & interests

Manufacturing, heavy industry, transport and commerce were significant areas of local male employment at the 1947 census. The occupation of Tiley was listed as cleaner in the 1935 and 1944 electoral rolls.

Community activity

Most Glebe Labor aldermen in the 1930s were anti- Communist, socially conservative, likely to be Catholic, belonged to moderate unions and happy to co-operate with Sussex Street.

Local government service

Tiley voted with Mayor McCormack and three other aldermen in May 1939 for the contract system for street cleaning and garbage collection. The Labor Party policy was the use of day labour, and therefore Tiley was expelled from the Heffron Party.
