Alderman City of Sydney 1851 1852

Occupation & interests

Because John Campbell is a very common name, it has not been possible to positively identify him. No links have been found to John Campbell MLC (1802-1886), son of merchant Robert Campbell (1769-1846). It was probably this John Campbell who was appointed to the Commisison of the Peace in February 1844 and a magistrate in September 1844. In February 1848, another John Campbell, a Camperdown soap boiler, was declared bankrupt. In 1851, this John Campbell had a soap and candle manufactory on the corner of Dixon and Liverpool streets. In 1856, he again became insolvent.

Local government service

John Campbell was elected Councillor on 1 November 1851. At his last council meeting on 6 December 1852 he resigned and was subsequently fined ₤25.
