Family background

Hughie Rohan was born in 1876 at Parkes, NSW, son of Hugh Rohan and Sarah. In 1910 he married Mary Frances Jackson at Newtown. He died at 134 Hereford Street Glebe on 19 August 1941, aged 65 years. Mary Rohan died 10 July 1944, aged 60 years.

Occupation & interests

Rohan was a wine saloon proprietor at 158 St Johns Road Glebe, opposite Glebe Town Hall, property which 29 years earlier operated as Maurice Brown’s grocer’s store.

Community activity

Most Glebe Labor aldermen in the 1930s were anti-Communist, socially conservative, Catholic and with close links to the union movement.

Local government service

Hughie Rohan voted with Mayor McCormack, and three other Glebe alderman in May 1939 for the contract system for street cleaning and garbage collection. The Labour Party policy was the use of day labour, and therefore Rohan was expelled from the Heffron Party.
